The Essentials of Islam (ar-Risālah al-Jāmi‘ah)

Shaykh Amin Buxton (UK)
Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh)

The book "Al-Risalah Al-Jami'ah" (The Essentials of Islam) by the esteemed scholar Ahmad bin Zain al-Habashi is a concise guide for beginners in learning. In it, the author compiles the fundamentals of three important sciences: the science of theology (Ilm al-Kalam), the science of jurisprudence (Ilm al-Fiqh), and the science of purification and spiritual wayfaring (Ilm al-Tazkiyah wa al-Suluk). The book begins with a discussion on the essence of faith, what one must know about Allah Almighty, and the beliefs related to the hereafter. It then outlines what a beginner should learn regarding the rules of purification (Taharah), prayer (Salah), almsgiving (Zakah), fasting (Sawm), and pilgrimage (Hajj) according to the Shafi'i school of thought. The book concludes with a mention of certain obligatory acts and the seven major sins of the heart and bodily actions that a Muslim must avoid.
